Maurice Questing was left to die in a pool of boiling mud. Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn knew that any number of people could have killed him the English exiles he'd hated, the New Zealanders he'd despised or the Maoris he'd insulted. Even the spies he'd thwarted - if he wasn't a spy himself.

Roderick Alleyn does not appear till later in the book, but the story is so eventful, and so well stocked with intriguing characters, that I didn’t mind.

The setting is delightful: an inelegant boarding house operating as a thermal spa. The hot springs benefit things like lumbago. But besides the hot springs there are deadly cauldrons of boiling hot mud. The narrow paths marked with little red flags among the boiling mud pots shake underfoot. The hellish ambiance is intensified by the sulfurous air. It’s a fitting stage for murder...

The victim is a vulgar businessman who upsets everyone he encounters. The cast of characters includes an irascible doctor; the hapless, inefficient, but rather sweet couple who own the boarding house; their daughter who works like two servants and could be attractive if she knew how; a seedy drunk who boards there; a famous actor there for his health with his secretary and his dresser; and a wonderful assortment of Maori characters from aristocrats to ne’er-do-wells.

The Maori plot elements infuse the story with exoticism. The espionage adds another level of interest. New Zealanders are growing more and more uneasy about the war news, yet can’t believe there could be spies in their county. There is also a thread of romance in the plot, tame but satisfying.

I enjoyed this book immensely. It was first published in 1943.

Colour Scheme (Audible Audio Edition) Ngaio Marsh Ric Jerrom Hachette Audio UK Books Reviews

Interesting plot and characters. One unusual feature is that Inspector Alleyn was in disguise. Another odd thing is that references to color did not appear until near the end of the story, which was a little surprising. Nevertheless it was a fun and fast read and I enjoyed it very much.
NOBODY gives me a sense of atmosphere like Ngaio Marsh! Even her less active plots (like Died in the Wool) give one such a strong sense of character and place that I find them intriguing. This book is one of my favorites; it is filled with larger-than-life characters and a larger-than-life plot, too.
Reading this book brought back all the reasons I loved Ngaio Marsh's books. It's great to know that my daughter will have the pleasure of discovering Inspector Alleyn, just as I did.
Colour Scheme is Book 12 in the Roderick Alleyn series, written by one of the finest writers of Golden Age detective novels, Ngaio Marsh. It is set, during WWII, in her native New Zealand, which must be a fascinating place to visit. It is a good book. Copyright 1943.
Another trilling book set in the New Zealand countryside and written with a lot of feeling, I am sure. I did find a lot of it very interesting with regards to the set up of this 'resort'. It was well written and described and I enjoyed every page, even though Inspector Alleyn came into the plot late and in disguise, but that would not fool any reader of these novels. An enjoyable read!
A rather suspicious and unbelievable set of circumstances finds Inspector Alleyn in New Zealand. In the midst of the thermal springs of northern New Zealand, a rather unpleasant character meets his death by drowning in a pool of boiling mud. The blundering Claire family owns the local resort, and they are well in debt to Maurice Questing, the unfortunate victim. Many wanted Questing dead.

At first I found the setting of this mystery to be quite interesting. The landscape is dramatic. That said, the solution to the mystery, the how, is deceptively simple. The who is rather unsatisfying, as the killer's character is not as developed as it could be. The side-plot about WWII spies operated at such a level of simplicity as to be somewhat absurd. A significant part of this mystery is figuring out how, exactly, Alleyn will come to be involved. I had that part figured about well before the end. This is not the best of Marsh's work. Her New Zealand mysteries never are.
While visiting New Zealand, I read three of Marsh's novels that are set in her native country. This was by far the best. It takes place in Rotorua, an area of geysers and thermal features that resembles a mini-Yellowstone. Part of it is also controlled by the Maori, who play a big part in the plot. Given how long ago this book was written (early 1940s), Marsh displays great empathy and respect for the Maori. The somewhat addled family of English ancestry that is trying to run a health spa makes for entertaining reading. Inspector Alleyn makes a late appearance, but the dark power of the volcano just beneath the surface of Rotorua dominates this mystery.
